The causes of cancer are diverse and complex, responsible for a mortality rate of 13% and increasing as lifespans extend. Hereditary cancers are caused by an inherited genetic defect, accounting for 3–10% of all cancers. These affected genes are then divided into two broad categories: oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. The remainder of cancers are caused by spontaneous mutation of changed genetic material.

Techniques

The Otogenetics Comprehensive Cancer Panel is performed by next generation sequencing using custom oligonucleotide-based target capture followed by Illumina HiSeq sequencing of the coding regions of the Comprehensive Cancer panel genes; with >100 fold of average coverage.

Optional bioinformatics analysis available in addition to raw sequencing data delivery.
